The Mechanical Engineering faculty recently voted to change the ME flowchart to move Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, and Heat Transfer one semester earlier.

Students may elect to complete one of the below optional emphases within Mechanical Engineering. An emphasis, indicated on the student’s transcript, will indicate high academic achievement in the area of specialization.

Professor Clavijo teaches courses in engineering management and leadership along with classical mechanical engineering topics involving thermal fluids (heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics).

Graduate Teaching Assistants (TAs) are used in many Mechanical Engineering courses. TAs may run laboratory sessions, give classroom lectures, hold office hours, and grade coursework.

Machine Shop Access Policy: Students need to obtain required training to access the Machine Shop. Training will be provided through modules. The student’s level of training will be indicated on a Machine Shop Badge, which needs to be displayed at all times when in the Machine Shop.

Solid Mechanics Research and Education in the U’s Department of Mechanical Engineering is characterizing, designing, and predicting mechanics of soft and hard structures.

Meets and advises Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students helping students develop educational plans and supporting them from admission to graduation. Assists students with major exploration, course planning, registration, campus resources, building study skills, transfer credit evaluation, degree requirements, and graduation clearance.

Technical Electives are the final phase of undergraduate education in Mechanical Engineering. This is a student’s opportunity to decide where and how they want to dive deeper into mechanical engineering content.

Robotics Research and Education in the University of Utah’s Department of Mechanical Engineering has close ties with the School of Computing. The research program focuses on design, construction, operation, and use of robots.
